Wow... we've used the word "canceled" vis-a-vis Beijing's live music scene a lot over the last few days. If you add in the number of times the word "canceled" was used by other magazines ripping off our style, that's a lot of net bad vibes! Well, here are some live music things coming up that AREN'T canceled, fingers crossed:
New promoter in town Dr. Smartass will hold a free rock showcase at Temple next Saturday, throwing the spotlight on "the current generation of female talent making an impact on the Beijing rock music scene." Live music from Nakoma, Maoxuewang, and Free Sex Shop, with a rock'n'rollin' DJ to spin in the late late slot. More info on that one here.
Dr. Smartass is the booking project of Bastards of Imperialism frontman / Beijing Drunk Fest mastermind Darryl Pestilence. He intends to shake things up a bit in the BJ punk/rock scenes, building cross-genre and local/laowai-band bridges with semi-regular showcases scattered throughout various Gulou venues, plus the occasional afternooner out at Tongzhou haven DMC. The next Dr. Smartass event is already slated for Friday, April 17 at XP; more on that one here.
And speaking of DIY punk crusaders: School Bar affiliates D.O.G. have made their first major announcement of the year. To wit: local bands Gum Bleed, Hot Wave, and Li Shi are now officially on the D.O.G. roster. Next D.O.G. gig is March 13, when a handful of bands will gather to pay tribute to mall-punk veterans Rancid on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of their breakout album, ...and Out Come the Wolves. More info.
D.O.G. also confirmed that the second annual three-day punk fest Punk it Spring will go down next month. That's good news. More on that when we get the word...
